Ready To Burn Kindling

Ready-to-burn kindling refers to small, dry pieces of wood specifically prepared for easy ignition and efficient fire-starting. It is typically made from softwoods like pine, which catch fire quickly, making it ideal for lighting larger logs or a full fire in fireplaces, wood stoves, or outdoor campfires. Ready-to-burn kindling has a low moisture content, often below 20%, ensuring that it burns cleanly without producing excess smoke or creosote buildup. Its convenience and effectiveness make it a popular choice for those looking to start fires quickly and effortlessly, whether for warmth or cooking.

We are “ready to burn” certified

The Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) appointed HETAS and Woodsure to run the Ready to Burn fuel certification scheme.

The scheme makes it easy for people to find the cleanest fuels for burning at home. Using fuels that are approved and labelled as Ready to Burn also means it’s easy to comply with Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020 that outlaw the sale of wet wood and housecoal, which are the most polluting fuels.

We provide bags of kindling for £5 a bag, or £40 for 10 bags. We offer FREE delivery on 10 or more bags in a 20 mile radius of NN16 0SJ. Alternatively, free collection is available from NN14 1EE.

Why start with proper kindling

Our kindling is cut from pine and kiln dried to below 20% moisture, so it catches quickly from a single firelighter and burns hot enough to get hardwood logs going without fuss. Dry kindling means fewer relights, less smoke in the room while the stove warms up, and a cleaner flue over the season.

It is supplied in nets and sold by the bag or in packs of ten. We are based near Kettering, Northamptonshire, and deliver locally, or you can collect. If you also need logs, our Ready to Burn firewood is available on the same delivery.

Kindling FAQs

How much kindling do I need per fire?

A generous handful, around six to ten sticks, is plenty for one fire when laid over a firelighter with a couple of small logs on top. A bag will typically last a week or two of daily use.

Is pine kindling safe to use in a wood burner?

Yes. Pine is the standard choice for kindling because it lights so easily. It is used only to get the fire started; the sustained heat comes from the hardwood logs added once the kindling is burning well.

Why does the moisture content matter?

Wet wood wastes energy boiling off water before it burns, produces more smoke and deposits tar in the flue. Kindling dried to below 20% lights straight away and burns cleanly, which is why Ready to Burn certification is the standard for fuels sold in England.

How should I store it?

Somewhere dry with some airflow: a log store, porch or garage. Keep the bags off a damp floor and it will stay ready to use all winter.

Do you deliver kindling?

Yes. Delivery is free on 10 or more bags within 20 miles of NN16 0SJ. Smaller orders can be collected free from NN14 1EE by arrangement.
